7 Ways To Improve Your Mobile User Experience

With most people opting to use mobile devices to browse the internet, it’s more important than ever to ensure your brand’s mobile user experience is up to scratch! Mobile web visitors are even less patient than desktop users, and if a site is not mobile responsive, they will be on to the next brand, a.k.a your competitors in no time.

Having a top notch mobile site shouldn’t be an afterthought, especially considering mobile web browsing has overtaken desktop. From now on, it’s all about mobile user experience and the brands that succeed will be the brands that master mobile UX.

Here are 7 ways in which you can improve the mobile user experience for visitors of your site.

1. Keep It Simple

Real estate on a mobile device is at a premium. You don’t want to frustrate visitors to your website by making it difficult to navigate around so Keep It Simple – or KISS (Keep it simple, stupid). Small icons, graphics or non-standard menus are out.

2. Analytics

You may think your flashy new mobile site is the business and looks the part but how many of the features of your site are actually being used?  You can’t improve what you don’t measure so install something Google Analytics and inject events throughout key areas of functionality to audit which features are being used.

3. Fonts

The type and size of the font in use is extremely important.  Users shouldn’t have to squint to read content on your mobile site so use a clean font with at least a 14 point in size.  Another thing to be mindful of is paragraph size, copy on your mobile sites should be broken up.  No more than 3-4 sentences per paragraph.  If you must, then separate with images.

4. Responsiveness and scale

With over 500 different screen dimensions across several devices that include the iPhone and Android operating systems, it can be challenging to make sure your mobile site and brand are being presented in the best way. Use cross browser testing emulator tools to ensure your mobile site is rendered just how you expect.

5. Make It Social

Social media has changed the way in which we talk about brands, products and services.  Your mobile site should give users the option of easily sharing content related to your brand.  Use a product like Sumo to easily add social media sharing capabilities to your site.

If your site has a members’ area, consider offering mobile site logins using existing social media credentials. Why?  Users have accounts to lots of online services.  Don’t put them in the position of having to remember yet another password.

6. Web Push Notifications

Not to be confused with Mobile App Notifications, Web Notifications from your mobile site are unique in the sense that they can be served in a desktop, tablet or mobile phone.  Web Notifications can be used to further promote your brand and improve the chance of converting users to potential sales leads.

7. Social Listening

Whilst not purely related to mobile sites or mobile user experience, listening to what users are saying about your product, brand or mobile service online is important.

If you’re not listening to what people are saying about your product, brand or service, then how can you improve or identify brand advocates?

Use a tool such as Brandwatch or Hootsuite to “hear” how people feel about your website and brand and then hone in on those users.
